The Teenage Cancer Trust concerts have fast become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the annual British music calendar. Now into their eighth year, the concerts, which were the brainchild of TCT Patron and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey CBE, have featured some of the world's biggest bands, treading the boards at London's world famous Royal Albert Hall.

The aim of the shows is to raise funds for desperately needed teenage cancer units. TCT units, which are all built in NHS hospitals, are improving survival rates for teenagers with cancer. They each cost over £2 million to build and at least another 15 are needed to ensure every teenager with cancer can have access to one.

It all kicked-off in 2000

The gigs kicked off in November 2000 with a legendary 'The Who and Friends' show at the Royal Albert Hall. DVD sales from this show raised over £1.2 million alone. On this incredible night, The Who were joined on stage by the likes of Noel Gallagher, Bryan Adams, Paul Weller, Eddie Vedder, Nigel Kennedy and Kelly Jones.

Daltrey has worked tirelessly to ensure that the every line up lived up to the standards that were set from the very first year. Amongst those who have appeared are Jimmy Page/Robert Plant, Oasis, Coldplay, Eric Clapton, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, Jools Holland, The Cure, Razorlight, Bloc Party and the cream of British comedy including Ricky Gervais, Little Britian, Steve Coogan, Peter Kay and Russell Brand.

So far the shows have funded the building of 3 TCT units and there are more in development. In 2008, the charity will open 5 new units (in Leeds, Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow, Southampton) and will start building work on a further 2 (in Birmingham and Cambridge). More units are needed to ensure every single young persion with cancer has access to one.

About Teenage Cancer Trust

Each day in the UK, 6 teenagers will find out they have cancer - that is over 2,000 new diagnoses every year. These young people often get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities alongside children or older people.

Teenage Cancer Trust focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. As well as state-of-the-art facilities to keep patients occupied during long stays in hospital, the units provide an environment where teenagers can meet others in a similar situation. Units allow patients to build friendships and mechanisms to cope with their disease without being patronised or ignored and are staffed with professionals able to fully understand and manage the needs of the patients.

To date, TCT has built units in London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Liverpool and Newcastle. Their goal is to ensure every teenager with cancer has access to a unit.
